3/4 as a decimal: In Detail

 Introduction

3/4 as a decimal: In mathematics, Numbers were classified in various terms. Such as real numbers, natural numbers, rational numbers, and so on. A decimal number is also one of them. It is one of the standard forms for representing integer and non-integer numbers. In this article, we are going to discuss the decimal form of the number in detail.

What is Decimal?

In mathematics, decimals are whole numbers, and the fractional parts are separated by a decimal point. The dot present between the whole number and the fraction part is called the decimal point. Let’s look at it by an example, such as 43.5 is a decimal number.

In this 43 is a whole number and 5 is a fractional part.

‘’.” is the decimal point.

Types of Decimal Numbers

Decimal are the various types such as :

Recurring Decimal Numbers (Repeating or Non-Terminating Decimals)

Example-

3.125125 (Finite)

3.121212121212….. (Infinite)

Non-Recurring Decimal Numbers (Non Repeating or Terminating Decimals)

Example:

3.2376 (Finite)

3.137654….(Infinite)

Decimal Fraction- It is represented by the fraction whose denominator is powers of ten.

Example:

81.75 = 8175/100

32.425 = 32425/1000

Place value in the decimal

With the help of the place value in the decimal. We can define the position of the digit in a number which helps to determine its value. Hence we are writing any specific number, the each digit is important.

Example:

For instance, let’s consider the number 860.

  • The position of “8” is in One’s place, which means 8 ones (i.e. 6).
  • The position of “6” is in the Ten’s place, which means 6 tens (i.e. fifty).
  • The position of “0” is in the Hundred’s place, which means 0 hundred.

As we move from the left, each position becomes ten times greater.

Properties of Decimals(3/4 as a decimal)

Some important properties of the decimal are as follows:

  • When any two decimal numbers are multiplied in any order. The product remains the same.
  • When a whole number and a decimal number are multiplied in any order, the product remains the same.
  • When a decimal fraction is multiplied by 1, the product is the decimal fraction itself.
  • When the decimal fraction is multiplied by 0, the product is zero (0).
  • when the decimal number is divided by 1, the quotient is the decimal number.
  • When a decimal number is divided by the same number, the quotient is 1.
  • When 0 is divided by any decimal, the quotient is 0.

However, division of a decimal number by 0 is not possible, as the reciprocal of 0 does not exist.

What is 3/4 as a decimal?

3/4 is equal to 0.75 in the decimal form 1/10 as a decimal means 0.1. And also 1/100 represents 0.01. However when we convert a fraction into the decimal form. First, we have to convert it into the number that has the denominator 1. So that the numerator can take from that has a decimal point in it.

The decimal form of 3/4 is 0.75.

How to change 3/4 as a decimal?

Method 1

By using the long division method

  • Here numerator is and the denominate is 4. Hence let’s divide 3 by 4
  • Then we obtain the remainder 3. So we keep the dividend until it leaves the remainder 0.
  • Then after that, we put the decimal point. So we put 0 after the 3. Thereafter we can continue our division.
  • After that again we get the remainder 2. Hence we continue the dividing.
  • Then we have to put one more 0. To continue our division process. Then after it becomes 20 now.
  • After dividing it 5 times we get the remainder 0.
  • Hence after that, the answer is 0.75.
  • So we can also 3/4 as 0.75.

Method 2

  • In this method, we convert a fraction into the equivalent fraction with the denominator as a power of ten.
  • In the fraction
  • 3/4, denominator = 4
  • Then we have to look  for a multiple of 4 which is a power of 10
  • Here the first power of 10 is 10 which is not a multiple of 4. Hence  the second multiple i.e. 100, which is a multiple of 4
  • So that there are 2 zeros in the denominator.
  • However, there will be two digits after the decimal in the numerator.
  • 3/4=0.75

By using this we can convert a decimal to a fraction. And for that, we consider the number of digits after the decimal.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Decimals are the numbers that represent both natural no and whole numbers. The fraction part of the number is represented by the decimal point. And with the help of the decimal, we can do very complex calculations. Decimal plays a very important role in the day to day life. It is used for the calculation of money, and many other practical applications, making them a fundamental concept in mathematics.
